Federal Carbon Tax Exemption for Heating Oil

On October 26, 2023, the Prime Minister of Canada announced that the government is granting a temporary three-year carbon tax exemption for heating oil in all provinces where the Federal Carbon Tax is charged. This exemption shall come into effect on November 9, 2023. 

Home Customers

The carbon tax exemption applies to customers who purchase furnace fuel oil used exclusively for home heating. For any deliveries made on or after November 9, 2023, you will not be charged the current carbon tax rate on your invoice.

Commercial Customers

The carbon tax exemption applies to commercial customers who purchase furnace fuel oil used exclusively for providing heat to a building or structure. Furnace fuel oil used in an industrial process does not qualify for this exemption.

If your business is eligible for this exemption, a Certificate of Exemption must be completed and returned to McDougall Energy’s Credit Department by mail or email. Accounts will be updated, and customers will not be charged the current carbon tax rate for any deliveries made on or after November 9, 2023, and before April 1, 2027.

For any accounts that are eligible for the exemption but have been charged the Federal Carbon Tax on deliveries made within the dates above, we will process a refund for the tax on your account.
