Life-time achievement is an appropriate term for Dave, as he has literally grown up in the propane industry. His father, Jack Karn, was a founding member of the Ontario Propane Association, and Dave learned a great deal about not just the business, but about life from Jack. Following in his father’s footsteps, Dave took the reigns of Dowler-Karn, but also learned the importance of working toward the betterment of the industry. Along with his brother & sister, Dave has continued to strive for excellence in the Dowler-Karn operations and in the propane industry.
In 2010, Dave was part of a working group that formed the basis of what is now the Canadian Propane Association. He, along with a number of his peers, worked to launch the Association and was elected to the inaugural CPA Board of Directors. He also served on the Board of Directors of the previous Ontario Propane Association and was chair of Emergency Response Assistance Canada.
Since 2003, Dave has served on the Technical Standards and Safety Authority Propane Advisory Council, ensuring the best interests of both the public and the propane industry are considered. In 2013, he became chair of the Propane Advisory Council, a role he has just recently stepped down from, although he continues to serve on the Council.
Watching his father do the same thing, Dave has been instrumental in introducing, assisting and mentoring colleagues who have decided to enter the propane industry. A number of CPA members owe their success today to Dave’s help and support to get their businesses off the ground.
Wanting to honour the legacy of their parents, Dave and his siblings John & Barb, recently formed the Karn Family Fund through the Elgin St. Thomas Community Foundation. The purpose is to continue to support those causes that are closest to the family, giving back to communities they have served since 1943. Congratulations Dave for a well-deserved honour.
